How a Chris Kreider trade affects Ducks’ offseason plans

As the offseason nears and trade talks pick up, the Anaheim Ducks appear close to adding longtime New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider.
On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli chatted about how a Kreider addition could impact the Ducks’ offseason plans.
Tyler Yaremchuk: The Ducks, even after bringing in Kreider’s $6.5-million cap hit, are still going to have north of $30 million in cap space. They basically just have to sign Lukas Dostal and Mason McTavish.
Frank Seravalli: And there are other big contracts coming along the way. You’re going to have to pay Jackson Lacombe at some point, although I don’t think that extension gets done this summer. People have said, ‘What about Mitch Marner? Oh, blank check. They’re going to give him $14 million.’ No, they’re not. They’re interested in Marner, but only to a certain extent. There is a cap and a limit to that because they know they’re going to need to pay these guys. I think this Ducks team is on an upward trajectory. I think you’re seeing the immediate impact of Joel Quenneville to be able to help lure in a player like Kreider. This is a big change. People have said, ‘Why on Earth are the Ducks taking $16 million off the Rangers’ hands for basically next to nothing? Why don’t the Rangers have to attach a pick to it?’ Well, the Rangers must have an inkling somewhere else that they could dump Kreider essentially for free, so then it becomes does [Anaheim] want to be the team that does it. By the way, the Rangers and Ducks had essentially the same record last year after the Jacob Trouba trade. Trouba made the Ducks better last year. Kreider will even more so.
