How concerned should the Canucks be about Elias Pettersson?
The last six months of hockey have been a struggle for Elias Pettersson.
The Vancouver Canucks forward finished the 2023-24 regular season scoring just one goal in 11 games before turning into a non-factor in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where he scored once in 13 post-season contests.
Now through the Canucks’ first three games of the season, the 25-year-old has one assist while the team is winless. With Pettersson only in the first year of an eight-year, $92 million contract extension, Vancouver fans are asking themselves what’s wrong with the former 100-point center?
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk play “The Ratings Game,” where Tyler throws out his most outlandish takes and Frank ranks them on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being thrown out the window and one meaning there’s some juice to it (remember: Tyler is in character in this segment).
Tyler Yaremchuk: Elias Pettersson is cooked! He won’t even hit 82 points this year – he won’t even his 70 points this year!
Frank Seravalli: Oof. I’m gonna give that a six. I don’t know, I’ll change it to a five, right in the middle. I think it’s likely that he finds himself at some point, but right now I think he’s completely lost. I think it’s all a confidence thing – when you see a star player in this league go in on a rush and shovel or flick a backhand toward the net, without even trying to make a play, that’s odd.
He looks to me, and I don’t know if it’s the right phrasing, but he looks hesitant, tentative, and I might even say scared at times, not inviting of contact. The fly-bys, the lack of puck pursuit, throwing the puck away, all highly concerning things for me.
