The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenseman Jaccob Slavin to an eight-year contract extension, according to Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli.

While there is no confirmation on the salary and cap hit at this time, Seravalli reports that it will be at $6.43 million per year.

Slavin, 30, is entering the final year of his seven-year contract with a $5.3 million cap hit that he signed with the Canes in the 2017 offseason. He receives a raise of $1.13 million, with his new contract being the highest of his career. With this new extension, the Canes lock him up until he’s 39 years old.

There are currently no details regarding any no-move/no-trade clauses or signing bonuses with this contract.

When his new deal kicks in next summer, Slavin will have the 35th-highest cap hit among defensemen next season. His closest cap hit comparables are Cam Fowler, Hampus Lindholm, Justin Faulk, Torey Krug and Colton Parayko, who all have a $6.5 million cap hit.

Slavin had another excellent season at both ends of the ice, with 6 goals and 31 assists for 37 points in 81 games. That’s the second-highest total in his career, coming five points short of his 42-point season in 2021-22.

Slavin did see his offense struggle a bit in the playoffs, as he only had 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points in 11 games as the Canes were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs in six games by the New York Rangers.

Slavin was a fourth-round pick of the Canes in the 2012 NHL Draft, eventually making his NHL debut in the 2015-16 season and establishing himself as a regular in the lineup. He’s gone on to play nine seasons in Carolina, with his new deal likely guaranteeing that he’ll play another nine down the road. He is a two-time winner of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, winning the award in both 2020-21 and 2023-24.
