Hurricanes place Joakim Ryan on waivers

The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Joakim Ryan on waivers. If Ryan clears waivers, he will be assigned to the Hurricanes’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Chicago Wolves.

Ryan signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Canes back in July. The contract has a cap hit of $775,000 at the NHL level and $110,000 at the AHL level.

Ryan spent the last three seasons in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with the Malmo Redhawks where he tallied 17 goals and 47 assists for 64 points in 156 games.

His last NHL game was during the 2020-21 season, where he played with Carolina. Ryan has four goals and 20 assists for 24 points in 145 career games with the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and Hurricanes. Ryan played in a career-high 62 games with the Sharks in 2017-18, recording seven assists, and 79 games over the next two seasons.

Ryan has appeared in 144 games at the AHL level mostly with the San Jose Barracuda, he played four games in 2020-21 with the Wolves. Throughout his AHL tenure, Ryan notched 13 goals and 70 assists for 83 points.

Prior to turning pro, Ryan played four seasons of NCAA hockey with Cornell University in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). In 34 games as a freshman, he tallied seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points. He finished his career with 12 goals and 49 assists for 61 points in 89 games and was named All-Ivy League First Team twice (2014, 2015) and an All-ECAC Hockey First Team selection in 2015. He served as an alternate captain in his final season.
