Is a goaltending controversy brewing for the Pittsburgh Penguins?
The Pittsburgh Penguins are off to a bit of a rough start – and their goaltending situation is leaving little to be excited about.
Through three games, the Penguins have now used third-stringer Joel Blomqvist in two of them. Blomqvist is seen as the goalie of the future for the Penguins, but Tristan Jarry is the team’s expensive option at $5.375 million until 2028. Jarry allowed six goals on opening night against the New York Rangers last week, prompting the Penguins to use Blomqvist in the team’s next two starts.
Jarry will get the net back against Montreal on Monday, but coach Mike Sullivan made it clear that you’ll have to perform to stay in the lineup.
Daily Faceoff Live’s Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli discussed the growing concerns in net in Pittsburgh:
Tyler Yaremchuk: “Is there actually a goalie controversy brewing in Pittsburgh?
Frank Seravalli: “I think there is. I’m sorry, when you get to Game 3 of the regular season, and your coach says we’re going with the best lineup that gives us a chance to win, and you have a goalie that’s in the second year of a five-year deal that isn’t starting, that raises some significant red flags for me.
“It’s the start of a long 82-game slog. Even if you have one stinker to start, you’re getting thrown back in the mix pretty quickly because you’re the guy. And the fact that Jarry was sort of subpar last year, I guess, kind of right at league average with save percentage, is not going to be good enough for this team. They’re going to need a higher threshold than that. And I’m not saying Blomquist is going to be that guy. It’s just that it should be highly concerning to Penguins fans that this type of decision is coming in Game 3.”
