Is Team USA the biggest superpower in hockey now?

There seems to be a feeling that the power shift in the game of hockey is moving away from the nation where the sport originated to its southern neighbor.

Following the United States’ dramatic gold medal victory over Finland at the IIHF World Junior Championship on Sunday, many have begun to believe that the nation more known for its love of American football and basketball is becoming the top superpower in hockey.

With gold medals in back-to-back gold medals at the World Juniors and having produced some of the best players in the NHL today–Auston Matthews, the Tkachuk brothers and Jack Eichel–there is an argument that the U.S. has what it takes to eclipse Canada, Finland and others as the best nation of hockey.

On Monday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk explain why America might be No. 1 in the hockey world.

Frank Seravalli: What a moment for USA Hockey in general…In the last 21 [World Juniors], the U.S. has won gold seven times, and now back-to-back. They’ve won three in the last five years. They’ve been as hot as any federation, any country in this tournament over the last while. They have staying power. They’re certainly not going anywhere. Massive moment for this country as a whole, in terms of the hockey-playing population.

I wish it just got more broad love. That should be a topic on Sportscenter. It should be something that’s talked about, but it’s so far down with everything else going and it barely registers a blip. Meanwhile, in Canada, for three days in a row, they were trotting out top executives from a back-to-back quarterfinal loss, trying to solve all the country’s problems…It’s been one thing after the other, and the U.S. is celebrating hockey supremacy today at the under-20 level.
