He won a Stanley Cup. He won the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player and the Ted Linsday Award for the player’s choice as MVP. Yet, one of the few things Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon has yet to win is the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading scorer.

However, that might change this season.

The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia is off to a great start statistically, though his Avalanche hit some speed bumps in the first month of the season. MacKinnon registered points in each of his 13 games of the season, and nine of those contests ended with the 2019-20 Lady Byng winner having multiple points. He might not be on a goal-scoring tear, having found the net seven times thus far, but his playmaking abilities have led to him racking up assists.

Through 19 games, MacKinnon leads the league in assists (27) and points (34), sitting one point ahead of Kirill Kaprizov of the Minnesota Wild. However, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, since returning from injury, is closing the gap, having scored 24 points in 17 games.

On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk give their thoughts on whether MacKinnon will finish with the most points by the end of the regular season.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Connor McDavid is hustling up there. He’s now in 13th, but it is still Nathan MacKinnon at the very top…Would you take [MacKinnon] or would you take the field?

Frank Seravalli: I would take [MacKinnon]…[McDavid is] is 10 back. I mean, he can make up the ground, but how much will MacKinnon slow down? That’s the real question. I’d still take MacKinnon.

Tyler: Who knows if he’ll even slow down? Last year was such a big year for him, winning the MVP.
