Islanders’ Mike Reilly to undergo heart procedure, out indefinitely
As per Frank Seravalli, the New York Islanders have announced that defenseman Mike Reilly will undergo a heart procedure on Tuesday and is expected to be out for several months.
Seravalli indicates, that “Doctors uncovered the heart condition through tests stemming from a recent concussion, though it’s not related.”
Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello called it “a blessing in disguise.”
“It was picked up through the different echocardiograms that you do for different reasons that you go through with any post-concussion situation,” Lamoriello said.
“[His quality of life will be] 100% and he will be able to play once this procedure is done,” Lamoriello said. “It takes quite a bit of time. It could be several months before he’s back, because of the type of procedure.”

The 31-year-old was placed on injured reserve last week with an upper-body injury. Reilly has appeared in 11 games this season, registering zero points but racking up three hits and four blocked shots.
The Islanders originally claimed Reilly off waivers from the Florida Panthers in Nov. 2023. Reilly re-signed with New York over the summer to a one-year contract worth $1.25 million for the 2024-25 season. Reily collected six goals and 24 points while averaging 17:15 of ice time in 59 games with the Islanders to close out the year; he tacked on a goal and an assist in five playoff contests.
Reilly spent parts of three seasons with the Minnesota Wild before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 2018 in exchange for a 2019 fifth-round pick. After three more seasons in Montreal, Reilly was sent to the Ottawa Senators in 2020.
Reilly split the 2020–21 season between the Senators and Boston Bruins, setting an NHL record for the most points in a season by a player without scoring a single goal. He signed a three-year extension with the Bruins after the season but was bought out after the second year of the deal.
Through 411 career NHL games with the Islanders, Wild, Canadiens, Senators, Bruins, and Panthers, Reilly has collected 18 goals and 104 assists for 122 points. He’s added one goal and five assists for six points in 21 career playoff contests.
