The New York Islanders announced Tuesday that forward Simon Holmstrom has been placed on injured reserve.

Holmstrom has tallied nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points in 37 games this season and is well on his way to setting career highs.

New York signed Holmstrom to a one-year contract this past summer with an average annual value of $850,000 for the 2024-25 season.

The Tranas, Sweden native was originally taken by the Islanders in the first round, 23rd overall, of the 2019 NHL Draft. Holmstrom came to North America during the 2019-20 season, joining the Isles’ American Hockey League affiliate, Bridgeport Tigers (who were later renamed the Islanders in 2021).

After getting a taste of the NHL during the 2022-23 campaign, Holmstrom had a real coming-out party this past season. In spending all of 2023-24 with New York, he scored a career-high 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points across 75 games. He also played in three of the Islanders’ five games in the first round against the Carolina Hurricanes.

In 162 NHL games, the 23-year-old has notched 30 goals and 26 assists for 56 points. In 154 AHL appearances, Holmstrom has potted 27 goals and 43 assists, including four points in six games with Bridgeport during the 2022 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Islanders announced that defenseman Mike Reilly has been placed on the long term injured reserve. Reilly underwent a heart procedure and is on the road to recovery.

Reilly will undergo a heart procedure on Tuesday and is expected to be out for several months.

Frank Seravalli broke the news last month that “Doctors uncovered the heart condition through tests stemming from a recent concussion, though it’s not related.”

Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello called it “a blessing in disguise.”

“It was picked up through the different echocardiograms that you do for different reasons that you go through with any post-concussion situation,” Lamoriello said.

“[His quality of life will be] 100% and he will be able to play once this procedure is done,” Lamoriello said. “It takes quite a bit of time. It could be several months before he’s back, because of the type of procedure.”

The 31-year-old was placed on injured reserve in November with an upper-body injury. Reilly has appeared in 11 games this season, registering zero points but racking up three hits and four blocked shots.
