Jake Oettinger was more than worth his new deal with the Stars

The Dallas Stars locked up their guy Thursday afternoon, signing Jake Oettinger to an eight-year, $66 million extension that will pay the netminder an annual average value (AAV) of $8.25 million.

Through three games this season, Oettinger is 3-0-0 with a 1.63 goals against average (GAA) and .948 save percentage (SV%). Entering his fifth NHL season, the 25-year-old has a career record of 116-48-23 with a 2.49 GAA and .914 SV%.

On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss Oettinger’s new deal and whether he left himself money on the table.

Tyler Yaremchuk: When Jeremy Swayman said he wanted to reset the goalie market, well, he ended up getting Ullmark’s AAV and Oettinger ends up getting the same one.

What do you make of this?

Frank Seravalli: I don’t know if these guys need to pay Swayman some royalties or maybe owe him a little cut of their deal as an agent fee. I don’t know how hard Oettinger’s agent had to work here, as there wasn’t a change in structure compared to Swayman’s contract, signing bonuses and everything.

Maybe that surprises me a little bit. I mentioned a few weeks back that this was the baseline minimum for Oettinger. Obviously he’s really happy in Dallas, especially with the no-state income tax that will net him more money than Swayman.

But Oettinger’s body of work and sample size is much larger. They’re the same age, he’s played a 62-game season, carrying the workload for the Stars, he’s had multiple trips to the Western Conference Final. It’s not that there’s any doubt against Swayman, it’s that Oettinger’s done all that and taken it to the next level.
