Jaromir Jagr’s Stanley Cup Final connection runs extremely deep

With the 2024 Stanley Cup Final set to begin on Saturday night, fans are geared up for an exciting best-of-seven between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers.

There is one thing that many are overlooking, and that is the last connection between one of the game’s greatest players, and the two finalists for Lord Stanley.

Jaromir Jagr played 23 seasons in the NHL, playing with everyone from the likes of Mario Lemieux and Larry Murphy to Johnny Gaudreau and Roberto Luongo. There is no question he is one of the most legendary figures in the sport, making an impact on the game that is still being felt heading into his (potentially) final season as a professional.

However, there is a little aura of Jagr surrounding this year’s Final, especially since he played with a number of Panthers when he was with the organization from 2015 to 2017. Captain Aleksander Barkov and defenseman Aaron Ekblad were in Florida during the 2016-17 campaign.

On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Colby Cohen look at how deep Jagr’s connections are with the Stanley Cup Final.

Colby Cohen: He has had a teammate in the Stanley Cup Final in every year since 1980, with the exception of 2022. When you look at this list [of players], and you look at some of these guys, it’s absolutely incredible. Mark Recchi pops up a bunch of times. You see Henrik Lundqvist–who we see all over the TV. How about Brayden Coburn in 2020, maybe you wouldn’t have probably expect on the Tampa Bay Lightning. Barkov the last two years…it just shows you how many generations of players that Jaromir Jagr has had an impact on, has been teammates with. I got to be around him during the Stanley Cup Playoffs…the guy’s incredible, he’s an ageless wonder, and he’s probably going to be buried one day in his hockey equipment.
