Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel announced after Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators that defenseman Josh Morrissey sustained a lower-body injury during the game.

Morrissey sustained the injury early in the second period of the game when he a bump into Jets’ center Mark Scheifele caused him to lose his balance and fall into the goal post of the Jets’ net. He limped to the bench after the sequence and left to the dressing room, never returning to the game after that.

There’s currently no word on the severity of the injury, as according to Arniel, Morrissey will be reevaluated on Wednesday.

Morrissey left the game having scored the 2-0 goal, along with a shot, a blocked shot and a takeaway in 12:24 of ice time in the win.

With Morrissey out of the lineup, his spot on the top pair alongside Dylan Demelo wasn’t replaced by someone else, with the Jets instead rotating their other four defensemen into that spot throughout the night.

Morrissey will have to hope that the injury isn’t a significant one, as it may disrupt what’s been a stellar season for the defenseman. In 42 games this season, he has 5 goals and 33 assists for 38 points.

If Morrissey’s injury is a long-term one, it may also mean that his spot on Team Canada’s roster for the 4-Nations Faceoff is in jeopardy. The tournament begins on February 12th, so Morrissey will have a little over a month to recover.

Morrissey is currently in the fifth year of an eight-year contract with a $6.25 million cap hit.

The Jets will look to build off of the win over the Predators when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Friday at 7 p.m. CST. Winnipeg currently sits in first in the Central Division with a 28-12-2 record, which is also the best record in the league.
