Joe Sakic named 2022 NHL GM of the Year

Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche has been named the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award winner for 2022.

The Jim Gregor Award is voted on by a 41-man panel that consists of 31 general managers, five other NHL executives, and five members of the media. The voting occurs after the second round of the playoffs.

Sakic was a finalist along with Julien BriseBois of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Chris Drury of the New York Rangers. He received 16 first-place votes while BriseBois had 12 and Drury had four. Six other general managers also received a first-place vote.

Sakic’s Avalanche won their first Stanley Cup this season since 2001, when Sakic was the team’s captain. He had one of the league’s strongest teams at the trade deadline and bolstered his roster by acquiring Artturi Lehkonen, Josh Manson, and Andrew Cogliano, all of whom were quality contributors to the team’s run.

This is the first Jim Gregory Award for Sakic. Lou Lamoriello of the New York Islanders won in back-to-back years in 2020 and 2021.
