On Tuesday, USA Hockey announced that John Hynes has been added as an assistant coach for Team USA during the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Hynes is the first assistant named to the Team USA staff. USA previously announced that Mike Sullivan would serve as head coach.

Hynes is set to begin his second season as the coach of the Minnesota Wild. He was hired after Minnesota had lost seven games in a row and 14 of 19 and fired Dean Evason in November. The Wild went 34-23-6 under Hynes but ultimately missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs by 11 points. Hynes also served as coach of the Nashville Predators from 2020 to 2023 and has a 318-279-68 coaching record in 665 NHL games.

On the international stage, the Rhode Island native has plenty of experience with USA Hockey. He won three medals with the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Teams in 2004, 2006 and 2008 and won gold as an assistant coach during the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Prior to that, Hynes spent six seasons as the coach of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP). He finished with a 216-113-19-9 record.

Hynes served as head coach of the U.S. team at the 2024 Men’s World Championships, the second time he has earned that honor (2016). Team USA finished fifth with a 5-0-1-2 record in eight games. They had their medal hopes crushed in a 1-0 loss at the hands of host Czechia in the quarterfinals.

According to U.S. general manager Bill Guerin, additional coaches and staff for Team USA will be announced at a later date.

The 4 Nations Face-Off will kick off on Feb. 12, 2025, in place of the NHL All-Star Game. The games will be played in Montreal and Boston and will feature teams from the USA, Canada, Finland and Sweden.
