Kevyn Adams says Sabres plan to build around Rasmus Dahlin, Dylan Cozens, and Casey Mittelstadt

Buffalo Sabres general manager mapped out his plan to build the team around three young players on Tuesday. One name was noticeably missing from the group.

“I think it’s building. I think that’s the right way to say it. We have a lot of young players that are talented,” Adams told Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. “Sometimes when players come into the league at a really young age, some people feel like maybe they’re older than they are. But guys like (Rasmus) Dahlin, (Dylan) Cozens, (Casey) Mittelstadt, these are very, very young players. So, we want to build. And I’ve been energized about this young core of Sabres we have that are hungry and they want to be part of the solution.

“These guys are proud to be Buffalo Sabres, they want to fix this and get this right, they want to move forward together. So that’s the young core that we’re working to build around.’’

Adams mentioned @Dylan Cozens, @Rasmus Dahlin, and @Casey Mittelstadt, the team’s first-round picks from the 2017, 2018, and 2019 drafts, but former No. 2 overall pick @Jack Eichel wasn’t listed. In the article, LeBrun went on to say that Eichel won’t be around come October…

“Obviously, you didn’t hear Jack Eichel’s name as Adams mentioned his young core. He won’t be around when the puck drops in October.”

The Sabres have been a disaster during Eichel’s six seasons in the NHL. Buffalo has come nowhere close to making the playoffs and it seems the final straw in the relationship between the team and the player is the ongoing saga over his neck injury.

Adams is reportedly seeking a massive haul for Eichel this off-season. Doing so will be critical for the Sabres’ rebuild to finally go right.
