Kings’ Anze Kopitar continues to be an ageless wonder

Now entering his 19th NHL season, Los Angeles Kings’ captain Anze Kopitar has shown that he can do it all.

A model of consistency, Kopitar has produced at least 70 points in seven of his previous 18 seasons, and at least 60 points in all but three of his previous 18 years. With two Stanley Cup rings, two Selke Trophies and two Lady Byng Trophies, Kopitar has been one of hockey’s best forwards of the 21st century.

During Monday’s afternoon match between the Kings and Ottawa Senators, Kopitar had three assists in an 8-7 loss, bringing his point total to six points in just three games.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Kings’ and Sens’ Monday afternoon shootout and the impact Kopitar still has at this stage of his career.

Tyler Yaremchuk: We haven’t spent a ton of time talking about the Kings so far this year, and I guess that’s somewhat justified. In the past few seasons, we’ve thought they could be a sneaky Stanley Cup pick and that they may be able to win their division, but they fell short.

This year, expectations were a lot lower than that, but there’s a reasons to be optimistic. The first one is the ageless wonder of Anze Kopitar, who already has six points in three games this year. Just looking back at his career, I can’t think of many players who’ve done it as consistently as Kopitar.

Frank Seravalli: He’s consistently excellent. A hat trick to open the season in Buffalo, and at a time when there’s some pressure on him and the rest of the team with no Drew Doughty, he’s come through in a big way.

Three consecutive playoff appearances and three consecutive first-round losses. You ask yourself who is going to step up and help them stay in the hunt, and I don’t know how many people who would have picked Kopitar at his age.
