The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced the finalists for the league’s 2024-25 Coach of the Year Award on Tuesday, tipping Toronto Sceptres’ Troy Ryan, Ottawa Charge’s Carla MacLeod and the Montreal Victoire’s Kori Cheverie for the honor.

Last year, Ryan won the first edition of the award, leading the Sceptres to a league-high 47 points and a 13-4-0-7 record. He and Cherevie were finalists in 2024, alongside Boston Fleet bench boss Courtney Kessel.

This season, Cheverie led the Victoire to the top of the PWHL standings, amassing a record of 12-7-3-8 and 53 points, holding onto the top spot from Jan. 29 through the end of the regular season.

The Victoire scored the second-most goals in the PWHL with 77 and allowed the fewest with 67, and were the only team to post a six-game win streak and a four-game win streak. At the same time, they held the best record at both home and away.

Meanwhile, Ryan secured a second-place finish for Toronto with 48 points and a 12-3-6-9 record, while tying for the best home record with the Victoire. The Sceptres also posted a six-game win streak and a nine-game point streak, with that run taking them from last place to within two points of the league lead.

The Sceptres also had the league’s best powerplay, operating at a 25.8 percent clip, and were the only team not to allow a shorthanded “jailbreak” goal.

MacLeod rounded out the finalists, leading the Charge to their first Walter Cup Playoff berth, posting a 12-4-2-12 record and 44 points, securing third place with a dramatic final day of the season.

While the Victoire and Sceptres mainly kept their form from the inaugural season, the Charge were the most improved team, and were the only club to have two three-game winning streaks in regulation.

Although playoff and international performance is not considered in the award voting, MacLeod led the No. 3 seed Charge to a semifinal upset against the Victoire, setting up their Walter Cup final series against the Minnesota Frost.

Already voted on by a selection committee at the conclusion of the regular season, the PWHL Awards will be unveiled on June 25 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Ottawa.
