Kraken and Oiler winning streaks, which team has proven more?
Tyler Yaremchuk: The Edmonton Oilers have won a franchise record 10 games in a row. Even back in the days of Gretzky and Messier they never won 10 in a row. But, in the Pacific Division, you also have the Seattle Kraken who have rattled off a nine-game heater. Which team has proven more to you?
Colby Cohen: The Oilers for sure. I don’t think there’s any question it’s them. You look at the way they are firing on all cylinders and that’s the best way to put it. You look at how they manage the puck, they are getting saves but they’re also not putting as much pressure on Stuart Skinner or Calvin Pickard when he’s been called upon. The way that Darnell Nurse and Evan Bouchard, Cody Ceci, they’re playing dialled in hockey. They aren’t turning lucks over, they’re breaking out clean, there’s no self-infliction at the blue lines and you got to give them a lot of credit for the way they have cleaned it up in Edmonton. Then you still have a couple of guys who at the snap of a finger can shove it down your throat. I have the Oilers in the top 5 in the NHL, I don’t know how you could have any other team playing better than the Oilers in power rankings.
Tyler Yaremchuk: They have got their points percentage above 600 now and the Oilers are going to be a playoff team hell. I’m going to give an off-brand answer and say that the Seattle Kraken has proven more to me in this stretch than the Oilers. We kind of knew the Oilers would figure it out after their first 8 games winning streak. I have kind of written the Seattle Kraken off, I was sitting there going ‘This team can’t score, they have average goaltending again’ and then Joey Daccord shows up and starts playing Vezina-style hockey. Do you think they have enough juice to keep it going?
Colby Cohen: The reason I did say Edmonton over Seattle was because of that exactly. I don’t know and I don’t think they have the juice to keep this going and find a way into the playoffs. One of the reasons for that being is you’ve got Jaden Schwartz, Jordan Eberle and Matty Beniers who all have less than 10 goals this year. I’m not big into digging into goal-scoring slumps, I think guys can find other things to do, like Beniers, he can still help you win and play on a nightly basis. Sure, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Eli Tolvanen are having career years, but Jared McCann continues to score goals for them. They play north-south hockey and generally teams who are disciplined in that approach are less slumpy since they don’t rely no high danger chances to produce offense. Maybe that’s one of the reasons the numbers are so balanced for Seattle. Right now, I think Edmonton not only makes the playoffs but find themselves in a position where they have home ice and sneak into that top three in their division.
