Is this it for Lou Lamoriello in the NHL? Maybe not

The New York Islanders announced on Tuesday that general manager Lou Lamoriello’s contract with the team would not be renewed. Whether that leans more towards a mutual parting of ways or the Islanders softly firing Lamoriello, only they will know, but it appears that it was time for them to make a change.

It became clear for the Islanders that Lamoriello wasn’t quite fit to build this team over the past few seasons, as they strived for mediocrity when a rebuild was needed. So with Lamoriello appearing to be out of touch with NHL roster construction, surely this means that, at 82-years-old, he’ll be heading towards retirement, right?

Not so fast. Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli talk about Lou Lamoriello and how he still seems committed to working in the NHL on Daily Faceoff Live.

Tyler Yaremchuk: For an 82-year-old, this is likely the end of the line for Lou, and if it is, what a career.

Frank Seravalli: I’m not willing to say that. You can say that at your own peril.

We had these same conversations 10 years ago when Ray Shero succeeded him with the New Jersey Devils. They’re like, “He’s going to be the President of Hockey Ops, and then he’ll just fade away.”

He’s as sharp as ever, he wants to work, and he’s someone that craves being in the middle of it. And look, I think a lot of people would assume that it’s natural at this age to take a step back. But he’s had two other stops since then, going to Toronto and then going to New York. And I just refuse to say at this moment in time that this is the last that we’ve seen from Lou Lamoriello in an NHL executive role. I just don’t.
