Logan Thompson has been vital to Capitals’ success
The Washington Capitals continue to be one of the more welcomed surprises in the NHL this season.
After entering last year’s playoffs with the worst goal differential of any team in the postseason, the Capitals look like a much different team at the halfway mark of the 2024-25 campaign, with a lot of the credit going to their goaltender.
Logan Thompson was traded to America’s capital last June by the Vegas Golden Knights, and with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder, he is proving that he belongs in the class with some of the NHL’s top goaltenders.
Through 24 appearances, the 27-year-old backstop has a record of 19-2-3 with a 2.23 goals-against average, fifth among qualified goaltenders in the NHL, and a .921 save percentage, placing him fourth in the league.
Thanks to Thompson, the Capitals are currently first in the Metropolitan Division, six points ahead of the second-place New Jersey Devils.
On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton joined Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk to explain the impact Thompson is having in Washington.
Frank Seravalli: We’ve established [Connor] Hellebuyck as No. 1 for Vezina. What would some of the other spots look like for you on your ballot?
Carter Hutton: Right now, I’d have to include Logan Thompson. His record right now, and what he’s done for the Washington Capitals team, that would be a guy that I would include…Those numbers are absurd. Yes, I know he hasn’t played as many games as Hellebuyck, but you look at Washington, and I don’t think there’s many people that pictured them being as good as they’ve been, especially being first in the Metro, and arguably one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.
