Los Angeles Kings sign Trevor Moore to five-year contract extension
The Los Angeles Kings have signed winger Trevor Moore to a five-year contract extension with a $4.2 million cap hit.
Moore is in the final year of a two-year contract with a $1.875 million contract, one he signed with the Kings in the 2021 offseason. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the deal. His closest comparables to his $4.2 million cap hit are Kings teammate Victor Arvidsson, Calgary Flames winger Tyler Toffoli, Florida Panthers forward Carter Verhaeghe, and New York Islanders winger Anthony Beauvillier.
Moore is building off of a breakout 2021-22 season with a comparable pace this season, scoring seven goals, 11 assists, and 18 points in 32 games for the Kings. He broke out last season with 17 goals, 31 assists, and 48 points in 81 games, and has emerged as a top six forward for the Kings.
Moore has also been excellent defensively since his role with the team has grown. Since the start of last season, the winger has a 54.59% shot attempt share and 55.18% expected goal share at even strength, and has been a consistent option for their penalty kill.
Originally an undrafted player, Moore spent parts of four seasons in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization before he was dealt to the Kings along with two third round picks in the 2020 and 2021 (which eventually became Alex Laferriere and, after trading the 2021 pick up, Kirill Kirsanov) in exchange for goaltender Jack Campbell and winger Kyle Clifford.
With Moore signed, the Kings now have just under $15 million in cap space to take care of the rest of their free agents. They’ll still have to re-sign Gabriel Vilardi, who’s having a breakout season so far in 2022-23, as well as figure out their goaltending situation with both Jonathan Quick and Phoenix Copley being pending unrestricted free agents, and Cal Petersen currently in the minors after struggling with the Kings to start the year.
