Macklin Celebrini is making his Calder Trophy case known
San Jose Sharks rookie Macklin Celebrini has been taking the league by storm early on and is already setting his name in stone as the potential Calder Trophy winner.
The 18-year-old has tallied eight goals and six assists for 14 points in 15 games and was recently named the NHL first star of the week which resulted in a great soundbite.
“Holy f–ck, I didn’t know that,” Celebrini said after being informed he earned the first start honor, according to San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng.
Today on Daily Faceoff Live, Frank Seravalli and Colby Cohen discuss Celerbini’s impact and the Calder Trophy.
Frank Seravalli: Let’s get a real time Calder Trophy update, I know that you Colby have been driving the Macklin Celebrini for Calder train. Just his play to this point and when you see that maturation, the hunger for the pucks, he’s making things happen for this San Jose Sharks team which is impressive.
Colby Cohen: Look, he’s drawing the other team’s No. 1 center, he is thriving in the faceoff dot as an 18-year-old. Remember, he just turned 18, what he can do without the puck and create defensively, and how much the Sharks can rely on him, is impressive. I talked to Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky yesterday and this kid is special, he’s a generational type of player. I said he would be a better center than Connor Bedard, and I think he should be on Team Canada. He would be the perfect guy to bring for Canada, let him be that 13th forward and right now I don’t think there is a rookie in the same realm that he is playing. Not to say Matvei Michkov isn’t impressive or creating, he’s been incredible but I just don’t see the race that close.
