Thursday night’s game between the Minnesota Wild and Montreal Canadiens was a special one for Marc-Andre Fleury, who grew up just an hour outside of Montreal and cheered for Les Habitants as a child. The Wild earned a 4-0 win, and Fleury recorded his 76th career shutout, tying him with Eddie Belfour and Tony Esposito for 10th on the all-time list.
Fleury announced before the regular season that this would be his last year in the NHL, and this game would be his final appearance in his home province of Quebec. Fans cheered his name throughout the game, and all the Canadiens players shook Fleury’s hand at the end of the game.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss Fluery’s final game in Montreal and what it means for the future Hockey Hall of Famer.
Frank Seravalli: First off, no one does ceremony and pomp and circumstance like the Montreal Canadiens. Every hair on the back of my neck was standing up, listening to the French rendition of “Oh Canada” and watching the Bell Centre jumbotron zoom in on Marc-Andre Fleury’s face. You knew he was taking in every second of that experience.
Quebec is hugely proud of its people, and to see him and the career that he’s had, the grace that he’s had in his career as a statesman and someone who has been a mentor for so many. Just the way he’s carried himself, to have that experience that night, and to get a shutout on top of it? It felt like one of those nights that’s written in the stars. An amazing moment for him, and to savour what’s been a long, memorable career, that is going to be one he never forgets.
