Marco Sturm, Ryan Warsofsky among finalists for San Jose Sharks coaching job
The San Jose Sharks are on the coaching prowl looking for a new bench boss for the 2024-25 season after parting ways with former head coach David Quinn.
Today on Daily Faceoff Live, Frank Seravalli highlights why Marco Sturm and Ryan Warsofsky are among the finalists for the new coaching job in Southern California.
Colby Cohen: A lot of these coaching positions are filling up but we have had news out of San Jose that Will Smith signed, and we know that Macklin Celebrini will be the No. 1 pick at the upcoming NHL Draft. So I am curious, that’s a team that has an open spot for a head coach, who is in the running for that job Frank?
Frank Seravalli: Yeah, so not really a surprise but Mike Grier likes to keep his cards close to the best. But I believe that two of the finalists and I’m not saying they are the only two, but two that have advanced far are Marco Sturm and Ryan Warsofsky. Sturm has some NHL coaching experience, not as a head coach but has played assistant, he was head coach in the AHL, and head coach for the German national team certainly an up-and-comer on that front and has ties of course to the Sharks.
Frank Seravalli: Another guy is Ryan Warsofsky, a guy who is viewed as the next up-and-comer in terms of coaches. I wonder though if there is a third candidate or someone we don’t know of quite yet due to everyone keeping their mouths closed. But because of the enticement of having Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, how much more attractive does that job get over the last six weeks for a team that needs a lot of work? Are there veteran coaches who have stepped up and said they want this job or are they going to sit back and wait?
