Martin Baumann steps down as CEO of Champions Hockey League
One of the leaders of one of Europe’s biggest governing hockey body is leaving his post.
On Thursday, the Champions Hockey League announced that Martin Baumann has given his release from his role as chief executive officer.
In a statement, the CHL says it was a joint decision between Baumann and the league’s board for the sake of the CHL’s future, “emphasizing the need for fresh leadership to drive the organization forward.”
Baumann was hired by the CHL when the league launched in the 2014-15 season and has helped grow the entity into one of the most exciting showcases of professional hockey overseas. Per the release, Baumann says the league has reached a point where new leadership is needed to guide its growth and expansion.
He sees his move out of the league as an opportunity for professional, as well as personal growth, for a chance to contribute to other endeavors.
“As Martin has chosen to leave the CHL and embark on a new journey beyond our organization,” league president Jörgen Lindgren said in the release. “I wish to express heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the CHL Board and all our shareholders for his unwavering commitment and tireless efforts in advancing the Champions Hockey League to its current position of success. Martin’s dedication to ensure continuity during this time demonstrates his ongoing commitment to the CHL’s success.”
The decision comes after the league initiated a realignment project at the CHL General Assembly on March 4. The plan is expected to help the league continue to find success in Europe for the foreseeable future, and will be discussed further during the traditional General Assembly in June.
Baumann’s departure is considered a step toward ensuring the realignment project is properly executed.
The CHL says the search for a new CEO has already begun.
