McDavid’s 1,000th point was a special moment for a special player
As if he needed to prove otherwise, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is in a very select class of superstars.
On Thursday night, in a 3-2 overtime win over the Nashville Predators, the 2015 first-overall pick notched the 1,000th point of his NHL career in his 659th regular-season game. It made him the fourth-fastest player in league history to accomplish the feat.
Only Hockey Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky (424 games), Mario Lemieux (513), and Mike Bossy (656) did it faster.
The milestone is just another endeavor in what has already been a remarkable career for McDavid, who has accomplished everything in the sport outside of winning the Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal.
On Friday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk talk about the special kind of player that McDavid is, and what it means for him to reach 1,000 points so quickly.
Tyler Yaremchuk: The crowd was absolutely humming when they saw the 2-on-1 develop. Everyone knew what Leon Draisaitl wanted to do with that puck, McDavid finishes off the 2-on-1. His dad, Brian, is nice and excited in the crowd…all in all, a great moment for No. 97.
Frank Seravalli: It’s unbelievable what he’s accomplished. I know everyone kind of just–because of all the routine greatness that we’ve seen–everyone kind of shrugs. They’re like, “Yeah, we know he got there.” To think about it from this perspective…1,000 points in 98 fewer games than Sidney Crosby, who I think is an NHL Mount Rushmore player. 189 fewer games than Evgeni Malkin and 211 fewer games than Alex Ovechkin. We can talk about era-adjusted, and that is important, but what McDavid is doing, I believe he’s the second-best player in NHL history, only to Wayne Gretzky. He’s very likely, if he remains healthy, to be just the second player to get to 2,000 points, that’s the next sort of thing in the scope.
The team accomplishments and everything else that needs to happen to be able to put himself in that conversation, and pedigree and category as some of the names we’ve talked about, there’s still a long way to go from that perspective. It’s kind of annoying about the discourse on social media. It can’t just be a great night for McDavid and his family…This is about Connor McDavid getting to 1,000 points in pretty unbelievable fashion.
