McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Apr. 7 – Craig Anderson vs. Antti Raanta
Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Thu. Apr 7., 2022:
Why I like this matchup:
I was hoping for Craig Anderson versus Freddie Andersen part 2, but I guess I’ll have to settle for Antti Raanta. Jokes aside, tonight’s game is intriguing because Craig Anderson hasn’t lost in regulation in his past six starts, going 4-0-2 for the suddenly resurgent Buffalo Sabres. I want to see if the 40-year old backstop can keep it going against the Metropolitan division-leading Carolina Hurricanes.
What to watch for:
Old-school patience meets modern positioning. Anderson loves to stay on his edges as long as possible, forcing shooters to make the first move. He’s done a nice job of updating his game over the years – Anderson is capable of all the modern post-integrations. But he’s judicious when he uses them. I appreciate that element of Anderson’s game because I think many younger goalies spend too much of the game down on their knees for no reason. He boasts a 14-9-2 record to go with a .903 save percentage.
When Antti Raanta is healthy, he’s one of the most consistent goalies in the NHL. He has an impressive .919 save percentage in 219 career games played. And this season he’s not far off that mark; Raanta has posted a .917 save percentage through 21 games.
Raanta isn’t the flashiest goalkeeper. He makes a living through excellent positioning and poise in the crease. I like that Raanta’s balance keeps him grounded: rarely does he end up on his back or stomach. So far this season, Raanta hasn’t allowed more than four goals against in a game.
What fantasy owners should do:
Anderson has been a dynamo for Buffalo, but I’d only start him if your team is desperate for saves. Buffalo has been hot, but I’m not sure a win is within reason against the Hurricanes tonight. Raanta has provided incredible value this season with his consistency and winning record. He’s a lock to start for fantasy owners.
Bottom line for Craig Anderson:
Just keep kicking. The Sabres are out of the Stanley Cup playoff picture – there’s no pressure. Have fun and give Buffalo fans more to cheer about.
Bottom line for Antti Raanta:
Be the Hurricanes’ best penalty killer. Buffalo has been strong with the man advantage lately.
