Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Fri. Jan. 27, 2023:

Why I like this matchup:

Shesterkin has been really consistent for the Rangers over the past two months, while Hill gets the first game of a back-to-back set for Vegas in New York.

What to watch for:

Hill and Shesterkin couldn’t be any more different by today’s standard for goaltenders. Hill is big and rangy. Shesterkin is on the smaller side at 6-foot-1 inches tall. And it shows in how they make saves. Shesterkin relies on skating and precision while Hill can use his sheer size to take up space in the net.

In his past 18 starts, Shesterkin has allowed four goals just twice. And never more. He’s been lights out for the Rangers, who have shockingly had trouble scoring at times. I think he’s arguably the most efficient goaltender in the NHL. Shesterkin is almost always early and square with his feet set before the shot even comes. And he’s an excellent puckhandler and his .918 save percentage continues to climb.

Hill’s season has been a mixed bag. His .907 save percentage looks fine, but the underlying numbers aren’t strong. According to moneypuck.com, Hill is 73rd amongst NHL goaltenders in goals saved above expected with a -4.5 rating. For him, it’s more about the eye test. Hill ends up on his back often. And he’s forced to reach more than most NHL goaltenders due to his limited mobility. But despite technical shortcomings, Hill is 10-4-1 for the Golden Knights this year.

What fantasy owners should do:

Shesterkin should be starting every game for fantasy owners. But Hill is a gamble, especially with Vegas’ recent struggles. I would look elsewhere with the Golden Knights playing against a strong team like the Rangers.

Bottom line for Igor Shesterkin:

The Metro division is tight and every point matters. Shesterkin has one win in his last four games despite playing well. The Rangers need him.

Bottom line for Adin Hill:

A strong game tonight might earn him more playing time down the road. Vegas is desperate for results.
