McKenna’s Matchup of the Day: Nov. 21 – Linus Ullmark vs. Andrei Vasilevskiy

Former NHL netminder Mike McKenna provides his Daily Faceoff Starting Goalie Matchup of the Day for Mon. Nov. 21, 2022:

Why I like this matchup:

There’s a good chance the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning finish the season fighting for first in the Atlantic Division. Can Ullmark continue to outplay Vasilevskiy?

What to watch for:

Ullmark’s record as a Bruin is staggering: he’s won 28 of 52 starts since joining the team in advance of the 2021-22 season. And his .937 save percentage this year is impressive. But for me, it’s the growth that Ullmark has shown. Playing behind a quality team has done wonders for his career. Ullmark’s patience has improved. And that allows his athleticism to shine without him getting out of position.

Vasilevskiy’s season has been a work in progress. His .909 save percentage is rather pedestrian. But Vasilevskiy has had several huge games – especially when facing a lot of rubber. Some of his best games are when he faces over 35 shots against. However, I do find it a little concerning that Vasilevskiy has allowed three or more goals in nine of 13 starts. Have they Lightning been loose defensively? Yes. But Vasilevskiy has been one save away on several occasions this year.

What fantasy owners should do:

If you need a win, either goalie could earn one for your team. But I do think this game could be high scoring. If your team needs shots against, either is fine. Bottom line: both Vasilevskiy and Ullmark should be automatic starters for your fantasy team.

Bottom line for Linus Ullmark:

It’s his crease in Boston. And he’s earned it. But games like tonight against a strong team like Tampa Bay can make a statement.

Bottom line for Andrei Vasilevskiy:

I’m going to say it: he needs a shutout. Vasilevskiy has only had one game this year where he allowed fewer than two goals.
