Michigan State’s Jagger Joshua alleges opponent used racial slurs in game
Michigan State University forward Jagger Joshua has said that an Ohio State player used a racial slur towards him “multiple times” during a game on Nov. 11.
In a statement posted on social media, Joshua said one of the officials heard the slur and immediately gave the player a match penalty. He then said Big Ten, the conference both teams play in in the NCAA, had an investigation but no further action was taken.
it was the second game between the two teams that weekend.
“The inaction has left me feeling confused and pessimistic about the movement of diversity within hockey culture,” Joshua said. “The ignorance of racism does not belong in our game. And I feel that I need to make people aware that this incident occurred, because without acknowledgment, the problem gets worse.”
Joshua, the brother of Vancouver Canucks forward Dakota Joshua, didn’t name the player in his post. But the game’s stat sheet indicated that Kamil Sadlocha was the lone player to receive a game misconduct that evening.
The Big Ten put out a statement saying they investigated the incident after both teams, officials on the ice and video from the game were consulted and that there was no indisputable evidence provided to offer further punishment.
“The conference supports the decision by the official to levy a game misconduct penalty on OSU. Due to the absence of indisputable evidence presented to the conference, the conference has not imposed further disciplinary action,” the statement read. The conference is dedicated to listening and learning from our student-athletes, and our Equality Coalition. We will continue to work together to constructively and collectively create inclusive, empowering and accountability resources for our member institutions.”
Michigan State has a 5-2-1 record in conference play this season with a 9-4-1 line overall. Ohio and Michigan won’t meet again until Jan 6 and 7.
