Minnesota Wild re-sign Declan Chisholm to one-year contract
On Saturday, the Minnesota Wild made a move in free agency, signing defenseman Declan Chisholm to a one-year, $1 million contract extension for the 2024-25 season, according to Michael Russo of the Athletic.
Chisholm was a restricted free agent after his one-year, $775,000 contract expired at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Last season, the 24-year-old played in 31 NHL games between two franchises. He began the season with the Winnipeg Jets, tallying one assist in two games. After being placed on waivers, Chisholm was claimed by Minnesota on January 29, 2024. He played in 29 games with the Wild during the second half of the season, finishing with eight points (three goals, five assists), 18 penalty minutes and a minus-8 rating while averaging a career-high 16:52 of ice time. He has nine points (three goals, six assists) in 33 career NHL games.
Since turning pro, Chisholm has spent most of his time in the American Hockey League. In 146 AHL games with the Manitoba Moose (Winnipeg Jets affiliate), the Ontario native recorded 91 points (16 goals, 75 assists) and a minus-9 rating. He added 11 points (two goals, nine assists) and a plus-2 in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games. Chisholm’s best professional season came in 2022-23 when he racked up a career-high 43 points (five goals, 38 assists) in 59 AHL games with the Moose.
Prior to his professional career, Chisholm was a standout defenseman for the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League. In four seasons from 2016 to 2020, he racked up 142 points (22 goals, 120 assists) in 214 games. He finished his junior career with 69 points (13 goals, 56 assists) in 59 games while serving as an alternate captain during the 2019-20 season.
Chisholm was originally drafted by Winnipeg in the fifth round (No. 150) of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
