This year’s rookie of the year is wearing le bleu, blanc et rouge.

The NHL announced Tuesday that Montreal Canadiens’ defenseman Lane Hutson has won the 2025 Calder Trophy.

Hutson ran away in voting with 165 first-place votes, well ahead of second-place goaltender Dustin Wolf of the Calgary Flames and his 15 first-place votes. San Jose Sharks’ forward Macklin Celebrini, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick who played with Hutson at Boston Univeristy, received 11 first-place votes.

The 21-year-old defender is the second Canadiens’ player to win the Calder Trophy in the expansion era, with goaltender Ken Dryden winning in 1971-72.

Hutson scored six goals and recorded 60 assists for 66 points in 82 regular-season games in 2024-25. He became just the fourth defenseman in the NHL’s modern era to lead rookies in scoring, joining Bobby Orr, Brian Leetch and Quinn Hughes.

His 60 assists tied Larry Murphy for the most by a rookie defender in league history, while his 66 points trailed only Murphy, Leetch and Gary Suter for the most in NHL history.

Hutson, taken in the second round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, played two seasons of NCAA college hockey with Boston University, scoring 30 goals and 67 assists for 97 points in 77 games. Following the 2023-24 season, he signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Canadiens.

Internationally, Hutson has represented the U.S. at two World Junior Championships, winning gold in 2024 and bronze in 2023. He also won a silver medal at the Under-18 World Championships in 2022.
