What have you seen thrown on the ice during a hockey game? Hats, cephalopods, rubber rats, chickens, tennis balls and bras have landed on the playing surface over the NHL’s illustrious history.

What about produce?

That’s apparently what went flying at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday night during a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens. During the second period, a fan threw a green apple toward Canadiens goaltender Jacob Fowler, seemingly trying to get the young netminder off his game.

After the game, which saw Montreal skate away with a 4-2 victory over their historic rivals, Fowler admitted that the apple actually hit him during the play. During a humorous moment after play had stopped, Fowler stated that he and the ref were discussing whether a goal against him would’ve counted. In the moment, Fowler was aggravated, but afterward, he was able to make light of the situation.

The act of distraction did little to get Fowler off his game. The 21-year-old made 26 saves, earning his eighth win of the season, placing him tied for fifth in that category among backstops league-wide.

While Fowler started the 2026-27 with the Canadiens’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Laval Rocket, the Boston College product has been a mainstay on the Montreal roster since Samuel Montembeault suffered an injury in October. After dropping his first start of the season, Fowler has helped won eight of his last nine starts, only squandering a point during that chaotic game against the Winnipeg Jets last Tuesday.

In his 10 appearances thus far, the Melbourne, Fla. naive has registered a 2.15 goals-against average (seventh in the NHL) and a .925 save percentage (3rd), along with two shutouts.

The Canadiens (11-3-3) sit tied for first in the Atlantic Division with the Boston Bruins. Montreal is next in action on Tuesday, hosting the Minnesota Wild.
