Corey Perry has scored 437 goals in his illustrious NHL career. However, his tally on Tuesday night might’ve become one of his more memorable ones.

Early in the third period, with the Edmonton Oilers trailing the Washington Capitals 3-1, Leon Draisaitl set up Corey Perry with a nice pass, as the veteran hammered home his eighth goal of the season to get his team back within one.

However, the powerful one-timer that beat Capitals netminder Logan Thompson wasn’t what people were talking about. Thompson immediately started to point at something on the ice over where Perry had taken the shot. After further inspection, it was revealed that an order of nachos had hit the ice prior to Edmonton rushing the puck into the Washington zone.

The hockey world immediately took notice, with the cheesy jokes barreling in across social media. Arguably the best post came from longtime Oilers reporter for Sportsnet, Gene Principe.

“That was a jalapeno for Capitals Logan Thompson to stop. Nobody is going to tell Edmonton Oilers Corey Perry that’s Nacho goal…I know, cheesy.”

The Oilers went on to lose the game 3-2, as Alex Ovechkin and the Metropolitan Division-leading Caps got the last chip…I mean, laugh.

Now, as a fan, throwing things onto the ice might be viewed as childish or immature. However, given the fact you’re at a major sporting event, it seems whichever fan(s) threw the concession onto the ice felt like tossing away money. It’s no secret food prices at Rogers Place are some of the highest in the league, with a hot dog and beer combo last being reported at a going rate of $20 CDN a pop. So, throwing rink-quality nachos away, even for a gag, might make some of our wallets shake with fear.

The throwing of objects onto the ice at NHL games certainly has a strange history. From your traditional jersey or hat-throwing escapades to tennis balls being thrown at the old Montreal Forum, or even a live hen being tossed onto the playing surface at the Great Western Forum, fans have found ways to get involved in the game, even if they’re behind the glass.
