Nashville Predators acquire Alex Biega from the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Nashville Predators have made a deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs, acquiring defenseman Alex Biega for future considerations. The return is unknown at this time.
Biega is currently on a one-year deal signed in the offseason with the Leafs, although he has spent the majority of the season in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies, playing only two games in the NHL. He has a goal and seven points in 31 games with the Marlies and has been a reliable option for them on the blueline.
Biega has previously played for the Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings in the NHL and was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the fifth round of the 2006 draft. He has played in 243 games over the course of eight seasons and has four goals and 42 points in his career, including a career high 16 points in 2018-19.
The fact that he was traded for future considerations hints at the potential for more deals from Kyle Dubas and the Toronto Maple Leafs today. They were at 49 standard player contracts with Biega, so getting rid of his for nothing allows them more flexibility to bring players in. Whether that’s an AHL forward for the Marlies or a big impact NHL player for the Leafs remains to be seen, but it’s likely the Leafs aren’t done making moves today.
