New Calgary Flames arena to be named Scotia Place

New Calgary Flames arena to be named Scotia Place

The proposed new arena for one of Alberta’s teams has its name.

On Monday, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation president Robert Hayes revealed the name of the Calgary Flames‘ new arena, Scotia Place.

The rendering of the new arena was also made public, showing the arena will have state-of-the-art amenities that have become common in all new arenas. Organizers are calling the exterior of the roof “The Cauldron” as it is made to look like flames.

It was announced in 2023 that the Flames would be getting a new home, as the team had been calling the 51-year-old Scotiabank Saddledome home since it first opened under the name Olympic Saddledomein 1983. However, outdated facilities and the all-around deterioration of the ‘Dome led to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman even saying the team needed to start looking into a new building.

The name Scotia Place shows a continuing sponsorship between the Flames and Scotiabank, a partnership that dates back to October 2010. However, one thing that might irk fans in Calgary is how similar the name is to their rival’s arena. The Edmonton Oilers have been playing in Rogers Place since 2017, which only adds another layer to the rivalry known as The Battle of Alberta.

The construction of the new barn in Calgary is expected to begin sometime this year, with the expectation that the arena will be finished in time for the 2026-27 season. According to reports, the project is expected to cost a total of $1.22 billion. The Flames will contribute $356 million, the provincial government of Alberta will be in charge of paying $330 million, and the City of Calgary is responsible for $537 million and any additional costs that may come up.

Scotia Place will have anywhere from 18,000 to 18,400 fans, a notable drop-off from the 19,289-seat Saddledome. Along with the new rink, the project will include the construction of a community rink, enhancements on the street level around the building, additional parking, and infrastructure improvements in the area.

As part of the deal, the Flames made a 35-year commitment to stay in Calgary. The team teased a potential move while in discussions with the city about a new arena.
