New Jersey Devils add Chuck Fletcher, Andy Greene, and Manny Legace to hockey operations staff

The New Jersey Devils announced a number of changes to their hockey operations staff on Thursday afternoon.

Chief among them was the hiring of longtime NHL general manager Chuck Fletcher to be the senior advisor to Devils president of hockey operations and general manager Tom Fitzgerald.

Fletcher, 57, previously served as general manager of the Minnesota Wild from 2009 to 2018. He held the same role with the Philadelphia Flyers from 2019 to 2023.

According to the Devils, Fletcher “will advise Tom Fitzgerald on hockey operations matters including player personnel, scouting, and contracts.” Fletcher’s father, Cliff, is a legendary former NHL executive who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004.

In addition to Fletcher, the Devils have hired Andy Greene as an advisor to their hockey operations department and Manny Legace as their head amateur goaltending scout and a development coach.

Greene, 41, retired as an NHL player in 2022 after a 16-year career split between the Devils and New York Islanders. The 5’11” defenseman spent the first 14 seasons of his career in New Jersey, serving as team captain for the final five before being traded to the Islanders at the 2020 deadline.

According to the Devils, Greene has periodically lent his time to the organization over the last two years and will now work with the team’s scouting and player personnel departments, coaching staff, and pro and amateur scouting staffs.

Legace, 51, spent parts of 12 seasons in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, and Carolina Hurricanes between 1998 and 2010. He subsequently served as goaltending coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2018 to 2023.

The Devils failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the 2023-24 season after finishing seventh in the Atlantic Division with a 38-39-5 record and 81 points in 82 games. Fitzgerald has been active in adding to his lineup this offseason, acquiring Jacob Markstrom from Calgary and signing Brett Pesce, Brendan Dillon, Tomas Tatar, and Stefan Noesen.
