Devils acquire Brian Dumoulin from Ducks for pick, prospect

The New Jersey Devils have acquired defenseman Brian Dumoulin from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for right winger Herman Traff and a second-round selection in the upcoming NHL Draft, reports Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.

Through 61 appearances with the Ducks this season, Dumoulin has scored twice and added 14 assists for 16 points coupled with 10 penalty minutes and a plus-two rating. On the season, Dumoulin ranks fourth among Anaheim defensemen in averaging 19:48 in ice time per game.

Originally chosen 51st overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2009 NHL Draft, Dumoulin has totaled 687 career contests counting stops with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Seattle Kraken, and Ducks in which he has recorded 27 goals and 144 assists for 171 points. The 33-year-old native of Biddeford, Maine has also tallied four goals and 21 assists for 25 points through 81 postseason appearances. With the Penguins, Dumoulin won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017.

Per PuckPedia, Dumoulin is in the final year of a two-year contract that carries a $3.15-million annual average value.

For Traff, the 19-year-old Swedish-born forward was originally chosen by the Devils in the third round of the 2024 NHL Draft. Competing in his native Sweden this season, Traff has posted three goals and four assists for seven points through 25 games with HV71 Jonkoping of the top-tier Swedish league, while he has also added four points through a pair of appearances with the HV71 junior club.

On the season, the Devils sit third place in the Metropolitan Division with a 33-24-6 record and 72 points. Thursday’s transaction follows Wednesday’s announcement that Devils star forward Jack Hughes will miss the remainder of the season and the upcoming Stanley Cup Playoffs after undergoing shoulder surgery. Hughes is expected to return to the ice for training camp ahead of the 2025-26 season.
