New Jersey Devils assistant coach Andrew Brunette arrested for DUI

New Jersey Devils assistant coach Andrew Brunette was arrested under the suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol on Wednesday.

Brunette was taken into Broward County jail in the Miami metro area, with his bond set at $500. The former NHLer was also charged for failing to obey a stop sign.

The NHL all-star festivities began this week in Sunrise, Florida, with the Florida Panthers serving as hosts.

The 49-year-old served as interim coach of the Panthers last year, helping the team win the Presidents’ Cup for having the league’s best record. Brunette was a finalist for the NHL’s Jack Adams award winner as coach of the year, but the team elected to move on with Paul Maurice instead of bringing Brunette back.

Brunette joined Lindy Ruff’s staff with the Devils this season, helping to guide the team to a 32-13-4 record and second spot in the Metropolitan Division. The team entered the NHL all-star game break with an 8-1-1 record over its past 10 games.

Prior to his coaching and management career, which began with the Minnesota Wild in 2012-13 in a special assistant to the GM role, Brunette had a 16-year NHL Career with 733 points in 1,109 games played. Brunette spent time with Washington, Nashville, Atlanta, Minnesota, Colorado and Chicago, scoring a career-high 83 points with the Avalanche in 2006-07. He retired in 2012 after spending one year with Chicago.

Brunette’s career was notable for his success after getting drafted in the seventh round in 1993. After a successful AHL tenure, which included a Calder Cup win with Portland in 1994, he eventually ended up as a full-timer with the upstart Predators in 1998-99. He had his first of eight 50-point campaigns with the Thrashers the following year, quickly becoming a useful forward everywhere he played.
