New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes returns to practice on Monday
One of the big names in the Garden State is back on the ice.
On Monday, New Jersey Devils revealed forward Jack Hughes joined the team for practice.
#BREAKING: Jack’s back at practice.
— New Jersey Devils (@NJDevils) February 5, 2024Hughes has been off the ice for a month since getting injured in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 5. The former No. 1 overall pick was hurt after awkwardly falling to the ice while carrying the puck.
This is where Jack Hughes got hurt last night, appeared to be favouring his arm as he left the ice. HC Lindy Ruff did not have an update on him post-game, so consider him questionable for Saturday | #NJDevils pic.twitter.com/RjmxN3Ort2
— Daily Faceoff – Fantasy (@DFOFantasy) January 6, 2024Unfortunately, the injury kept Hughes from participating in the NHL All-Star festivities. He was in Toronto to serve as co-captain of one of the four teams, alongside the Vancouver Canucks captain and brother Quinn, along with Michael Buble.
It is unknown when Hughes will return to game action.
The Devils struggled while the former USNTDP start was on the shelf. Having missed the last 10 games, New Jersey has gone 3-6-1, losing three of their last four games prior to the break.
Hughes had already missed some time earlier this season, having sat out five games back in November with an upper-body injury.
In the 32 games prior to the injury, Hughes scored 15 goals and 30 assists. Despite the extended time away, he is still second on the team in scoring, five points behind Jesper Bratt.
Hughes is on an injured list that includes some big names. Dougie Hamilton is out for a few more months after surgery to repair a torn pectoral. Tomas Nosek and Brendan Smith have both been on injured reserve since last month.
The Devils (24-20-3) will definitely welcome him back with open arms. Coming out of the break, they are tied for fifth in the Metropolitan Division with the Pittsburgh Penguins, five points back of the Philadelphia Flyers for third. New Jersey is also seven point back of the Detroit Red Wings for the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Devils host the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night, before taking on the Calgary Flames on Thursday.
