New Jersey Devils promote Kate Madigan to assistant general manager

Kate Madigan has been promoted by the New Jersey Devils to assistant general manager, the team announced on Wednesday.

“I am extremely honored to take this next step in my professional career,” said Madigan. “I want to thank Tom [Fitzgerald], our managing partners, executive leadership group, and members of the organization who supported me throughout my time with New Jersey and this new, exciting opportunity. I look forward to working with this group to make the New Jersey Devils better, each day, and bring back the consistent success our fans expect and deserve. I’m excited for the future of this team not only now, but for what it will be.”

Madigan is the fifth woman to be promoted to an AGM role in the NHL this year, joining Emilie Castonguay and Cammi Granato (Vancouver Canucks), Meghan Hunter (Chicago Blackhawks), and Hayley Wickenheiser (Toronto Maple Leafs).

Before this year, Angela Gorgone was the only woman ever to hold such a position in the NHL. She was the assistant general manager of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for the 1996-97 season.

Madigan, who holds business administration and accounting degrees from Northeastern University, joined the Devils back in 2017. She has worked in multiple different roles for the Devils, most recently as the executive director of hockey management and operations.

Her role as an assistant general manager will place Madigan in a small group that general manager Tom Fitzgerald will lean on for input on key strategy and decision making.

“Kate has been an incredibly valuable resource to not only me but to our entire hockey operations leadership staff, particularly over the past three years, as part of key hockey decisions,” said Fitzgerald. “This promotion is reflective of the duties and responsibilities that Kate has assumed within our organization during that time. Her diligence, work ethic, attention to detail, ability to communicate with all staff, strategy, and vision are qualities that I look for in our leadership.”
