New Jersey Devils sign Josh Filmon to three-year, entry-level contract

New Jersey Devils Executive Vice President and General Manager Tom Fitzgerald announced that the club had signed prospect Josh Filmon to a three-year, entry-level contract beginning in 2023-24. Filmon also signed an Amateur Try-Out agreement with the Devils American Hockey League affiliate Utica Comets. He will report to Utica today.

Filmon was selected in the sixth round (No. 166) in the 2022 NHL Draft. During his draft year, while playing for the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League, Filmon notched 45 points in 67 games. He returned to Swift Current for this third season and was named an alternate captain. During the 2022-23 season, he registered a team-leading 47 goals and 75 points in 64 games. During a Dec. 16 game against eh Edmonton Oil Kings, Filmon recorded a six-goal game, becoming the seventh WHL player in history to record such a feat. Filmon played on a well-rounded Broncos team that featured Pittsburgh Penguins first-round pick Owen Pickering, Anaheim Ducks prospect Connor Hvidston and Florida Panthers prospect Josh Davies. 

Filmon was drafted by the Broncos 67th overall in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. The 6-foot-3 forward has recorded 72 goals and 50 assists for 122 points in 148 games since the 2020-21 season. Filmon also represented Team Canada on the international stage in 2021-22 at the Under-18 World Junior Challenge. He registered one assist and two penalty minutes in three games. He will join the Comets, who currently sit second in the North Division in the AHL with a record of 31-24-6-3 with 71 points. Filmon has the potential to get some AHL playoff games this season to help his development at the pro level.
