The New York Islanders have agreed to an eight-year contract with defenceman Adam Pelech, the team announced Friday.

The deal carries a $5,750,000 cap hit, a hefty raise from the $1,600,000 annual salary that Pelech had on his last contract, a four-year deal signed back in 2017.

Pelech was a restricted free agent this summer with one more year left of team control before he could become eligible to hit unrestricted free agency.

Selected in the third round of the 2012 draft by the Islanders, Pelech has developed into one of the league’s top defensive defencemen. He logged 21:03 per night for the Islanders in 2021 and had an even-strength on-ice goal differential of 45-to-32. Pelech and his defensive partner @Ryan Pulock each received one Norris Trophy vote for the league’s top defenceman.

The Islanders still have a handful of restricted free agents in need of new contracts as @Anthony Beauvillier, @Ilya Sorokin, and @Kieffer Bellows remain unsigned.
