New York Islanders sign Fredrik Karlstrom to one-year, $775,000 contract

The New York Islanders have signed free agent forward Fredrik Karlstrom to a one-year, one-way contract that has a cap hit of $775,000.

Karlstrom spent the 2023-24 season with the Dallas Stars’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Texas Stars, where he registered 21 goals and 23 assists for 44 points in 72 games.

The 26-year-old has eight games of NHL experience over the past two years, registering just one assist. He has spent the majority of his time with Texas, tallying 47 goals and 52 assists for 99 points in a middle-six role over 112 games.

Before coming over to North America, the 2016 third-round No. 90 overall pick played four seasons in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), recording 26 goals and 60 points with Vaxjo and Linkoping. He also spent some time with AIK in the second-tier Swedish league, registering 24 points in 47 games.

Karlstrom has some experience with Sweden’s national team, recording three points at the 2017 and 2018 world junior tournaments. He also has two games of experience with Sweden’s men’s team, but didn’t register a point.

Lamoriello and the Islanders have continued to stay busy, signing Anthony Duclair to a four-year $14 million contract, and Mike Reilly to a one-year, $1.25 million contract yesterday. While signing Marc Gatcomb to a three-year, entry-level contract and Karlstrom to a one-year deal today.
