New York Islanders sign Matthew Maggio to three-year entry-level contract

The New York Islanders have announced that they have signed forward Matthew Maggio to a three-year entry-level contract. According to Cap Friendly, he will make $870,000 at the NHL level and $82,500 at the AHL level. The contract runs through 2025-26.

The 20-year-old was drafted by the Islanders in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft. During his draft year while playing for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, he registered 38 goals and 85 assists; he was second among the team in points trailing only Dallas Stars rookie Wyatt Johnston. He added to that total by producing 17 points in 25 games in the OHL Playoffs as the Spitfires went all the way to the OHL Final but ultimately lost to the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Last season, he notched an impressive 54 goals and 57 assists for 111 points in 66 games. He won the OHL’s Eddie Powers Trophy for producing the most points among OHL skaters. He also led the entire OHL in goals and was awarded the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as the right winger who scored the most points in the regular season. While the Spitfires had ambitions to go on another deep playoff run — even adding Seattle Kraken’s Shane Wright to the club, they fluttered out and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Throughout his four years in the OHL, he appeared in 212 games with the Spitfires and Ottawa 67’s, registering 99 goals and 118 assists for 217 points. He averaged 1.02 points per game during his major junior career.

Following the Spitfires’ elimination, Maggio signed an Amateur Tryout Agreement (ATO) with the Islanders American Hockey League affiliate Bridgeport Islanders. He registered two assists in three games.
