Islanders will not trade Kyle Palmieri, working on contract extension

The New York Islanders have told forward Kyle Palmieri they will not move him at this year’s NHL Trade Deadline, instead hoping to secure a contract extension in the coming days.
Daily Faceoff hockey insider Frank Seravalli confirmed the news on the Daily Faceoff Deadline Show.
Palmeri was No. 9 on Seravalli’s Final Trade Targets Board, and the 34-year-old was expected to fetch a decent return for an Islanders group that’s struggling.
Palmieri’s former teammate Brock Nelson was acquired by the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, along with William Dufour for prospect Cal Ritchie, defenseman Oliver Kylington, a first-round pick in either 2026 or 2027 and a 2028 third-rounder.
Palmieri was one of the more notable Islanders players rumored on the market behind Nelson. Palmieri has 20 goals and 41 points this season, with a full-season pace of 55. It would be his best output as an Islander after scoring 30 goals and 54 points a year ago.
Palmieri has hit the 50-point mark three separate times, including a personal best of 30 goals and 57 points back in 2015-16 when he played for the New Jersey Devils. Palmieri has 520 points in 879 career games over 15 seasons since getting selected 26th overall by the Anaheim Ducks back in 2009.
Away from the NHL, Palmieri won gold at the 2010 World Juniors and bronze the year after. He also represented USA at the 2012 World Championship and again at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, but failed to win a medal in either event.
The Smithtown, New York native is in the final season of a four-year pact worth $5 million annually.
The Islanders are 28-26-7 with 63 points, sixth in the Metropolitan Division and still nine points back of one of the Wild Card spots in the Eastern Conference.
