New York Rangers sign Brandon Scanlin to two-year contract extension

The New York Rangers have signed depth defenseman Brandon Scanlin to a two-year contract worth $775,000 per season, with a $250,000 guarantee.

The 24-year-old defenseman originally was an undrafted free agent signing out of college back in 2022. He has spent his whole pro career to date with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, scoring seven goals and 14 points in 43 games this season. He has 11 goals and 30 points over parts of three seasons in the second-tier pro league.

Before joining Hartford, Scanlin was named to the NCHC all-rookie team back in 2020 while with the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He elected to sign with the Rangers after his junior year in 2021-22, where he posted a career-best six goals and 31 points in 38 games.

Scanlin spent two years with the Jr. B Brantford 99ers before heading over to the famed Brooks Bandits AJHL program in 2017. He spent two years there, earning playoff MVP honors after winning the championship in 2018-19.

The 6-foot-4, 214-pound defenseman is likely to remain with Hartford for the remainder of his contract, which will make him a UFA in 2026.

The Rangers have six defensemen signed for 2024-25, with Ryan Lindgren and Braden Schneider set for paydays as RFAs this summer. Erik Gustafsson. who has been good for the Rangers, is a pending UFA. According to CapFriendly, the Rangers have $360,083 in projected cap space right now, and $14.5 million in free space for 2024-25.
