Rangers sign James Reimer to one-year contract

The Blueshirts are getting some experience between the pipes.
On Sunday, the New York Rangers signed goaltender James Reimer to a one-year contract. The deal will carry a pro-rated cap hit of $850,000 for the remainder of the 2026-27 season.
Reimer came to the Rangers organization earlier this month, signing a PTO with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. The 38-year-old made his season debut on Friday night, pitching a 35-save shutout against the Boston Bruins’ top farm team, the Providence Bruins. As a result, Reimer became the oldest goaltender to not allow a goal in an AHL game since 2008.
Reimer comes into a situation that he’s very familiar with. Just last season, he signed a PTO with the Belleville Senators, the Ottawa Senators‘ primary affiliate, appearing in one game before signing a one-year deal with the big club. Ottawa pursued him because of extended absences from Linus Ullmark and lackluster play from then-backup Leevi Merilainen.
This season, the Rangers have been bitten by the injury bug in net, with Igor Shesterkin going down for the rest of the 2026-27 season and Joonas Korpisalo being out of action since the preseason. Reimer was brought in to be a security blanket for the team, which has relied on Dylan Garand for the last couple of weeks, with Spencer Martin backing him up in Manhattan.
The Manitoba native went 7-4-2 in 14 games last year, helping the Sens sneak into the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. He posted a 2.42 goals-against average, a .886 save percentage and one shutout.
In 539 regular-season games in his NHL career, Reimer has a mark of 232-191-67, with a 2.88 GAA, a .909 SV% and 32 shutouts.
The Rangers (7-5-1) are back in action on Monday night, hosting the Los Angeles Kings.
