New York Rangers sign Jimmy Vesey to two-year, $1.6M extension

New York Rangers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Chris Drury announced Wednesday that the Rangers have agreed to terms with forward Jimmy Vesey on a two-year, $1.6 million extension through the 2024-25 season.

Vesey, 29, signed a one-year contract as a free agent on Oct. 9th. He has recorded 12 points (6G, 6A) in 38 games this season while holding a plus-4 rating. He is among the Rangers leaders in shorthanded ice time with 56:08 logged, he is also one of three Rangers with a shorthanded goal this season.

Vesey was originally selected in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators. That following year, Vesey helped the USA defeat Sweden and capture a Gold medal at the World Juniors; putting up five points in seven games on a team that featured Rangers captain Jacob Trouba, and Vincent Trochek. The Boston, Massachusetts native never suited up for the Preds’ and in August of 2016, he signed his entry-level contract with the Rangers. In the 2016-16 NCAA season, Vesey notched 46 points in 33 games; he was awarded the Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA’s Top Collegiate Player and was named to the NCAA First All-American team. The former Harvard University captain made his NHL debut with the Rangers in the fall of 2016, registering 27 points (16G, 11A) in 80 games.

In 2018-19, Vesey recorded career highs in assists (18) and points (35) through 81 games. After Vesey’s Rangers campaign, he toured the NHL for a few seasons, making stops in Buffalo (2019-20), Toronto (2020-21), Vancouver (2020-21) and New Jersey (2021-22). Through 460 career games between the Rangers, Sabres, Maple Leafs, Canucks, and Devils, Vesey has notched 147 points (78G, 69A).
