New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin became the third goalie this season to score a goal.

It was an interesting play. The puck ripped off Sorokin’s pad, hit the boards, and trickled down to the empty Nashville net. Due to Sorokin being the last Islanders player to touch the puck, he was credited with the goal. Not a traditional goalie goal, but we will take it! Sorokin joins Alex Nedeljkovic and Filip Gustavsson as goalie scorers for the 2024-25 campaign.

New York defeated the Nashville Predators 7-4 in Saturday’s matinee game.

With Saturday’s win, Sorokin improved to 21-18-4 on the season, coupled with a .905 save percentage, 2.76 goals-against average, and two shutouts.

Originally chosen by New York in the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft, Sorokin is in his fifth season with the Islanders, now totalling 226 career contests in which he has put together a 111-79-34 record with a .917 save percentage and 2.56 goals-against average. In 2022-23, Sorokin finished as runner-up to Linus Ullmark then of the Boston Bruins for Vezina Trophy honors after posting 31 wins in 62 games alongside a .924 save percentage and 2.33 goals-against average.

Sorokin was named to the Islanders Quarter Century team back in January. The 2024-25 campaign is the first of an eight-year contract that he signed on July 1, 2023. Under it, he will be paid $8.25 million through the 2031-32 season.

In 2023-24, Sorokin posted a 25-19-12 record with a 3.01 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. The 29-year-old also posted two shutouts. His numbers were a little down from his career-best run during the 2022-23 campaign, where Sorokin went 31-22-7 with a 2.34 GAA, a .924 SV% and six shutouts.
